Red Ants with Green Beards

The mini-Annals of Improbable Research has another limerick competition. This time, one was supposed to compose a limerick to illuminate the following research article:

"Red Ants With Green Beards," R. Gadagkar, Journal of Biosciences, vol. 23, no. 5, December 1998, pp. 535-6.

I didn't do very well at elucidating the research, but here (apologies to Lewis Carroll) is my effort:

A quirky command of his Queen
Forced a red ant to dye his beard green,
But he thought of a plan
To employ a large fan
Behind which it couldn’t be seen.
