Risible Religious Round-Up @ 11:10 am

(Creation) scientists have discovered that squids are not alive.

Not new news, but a new study confirms that atheists are America's most distrusted minority. If only atheism could become hip and trendy like homosexuality.

Meanwhile, secular Americans are least likely to approve of torture. Conversely, more than half of American Catholics believe that torture is often or sometimes justified in cases of suspected terrorists. Personally, I would put myself in the rare category, as in "If your name is neither James Bond nor Jack Bauer, then you have no business torturing people on my behalf."

Finally, dear opera-lovers (and -haters), follow along with me on this story: An elementary school music teacher invites Opera Colorado singers to perform at her school. In order to prepare them for opera, she showed her kids 12 minutes of highlights from Faust, which was on a Who's Afraid of Opera? video in her classroom. Later, a parent complains about this devil music, and asks, "Are you not a Christian?"
Guess how the story ends. Go on, guess.

The teacher, who in fact has recorded two albums of Christian music, is forced by the school to write an apology to the parents of her students. The Opera Colorado performance is cancelled, with no reason given. The teacher is furthermore placed on administrative leave. Thank Odin the school board is protecting its children from the evils of being exposed to opera.

1. I have a new theory. If an argument takes more than 3 pages and more contortions than a Chinese acrobat in Cirque Du Soliel to justify then you are probably dead wrong.

2. We obviously need a symbol. They have rainbows and pink triangles. We need something happy and warm.

3. Hypocrisy is FUN! WWJT? Who would Jesus Torture?

4. It's FAUST! It's classical! It's about a guy that sells his soul to satan for knowledge lalallallala tell me no more lalallala that's all I need lalaalla it's SATANIC!!!!!!!! God, I hope they don't ever let them read the naughty works of those pagan Greeks~

1. "...then you are probably dead wrong."

Spoken like a true squidlover. You probably don't even think that bats are birds.

2. Having a symbol implies a certain organization that I think is never going to happen with a group of people who only have a common lack as a bond. The American Atheists symbol isn't very warm and fuzzy. In the tradition of rainbows and pink triangles, I nominate the invisible pink unicorn.

that is way too star trek for me.

I have a motto though - "we are the ones who grumble under our breath all the time"

I think you're going to enjoy V. If nothing else, it's two hours of someone doing what we're always thinking when these things come up. ;)

If you want to band together with other atheists, then it helps to support the Secular Coalition for America which is the atheist lobbying group (well, there's two of them).

Here are a few more atheist links that I just HAPPEN TO HAVE:

Celebrity Atheists (a page I hope to be on someday)

Good and bad reasons for believing (Richard Dawkins)

Mythbuster

The Atheism Web

The ebay atheist

Poll of 2000 people? That's practically meaningless.

Not really. Assuming they managed to get an appropriate random sample, 2000 responses means the margin of error on the poll is +/- 2%.
