atheists new and old @ 05:59 pm

Tags: ,

The Wired article on the 'New Atheists' seems to be getting retreaded here and there in journalism land. I'm still hoping the useless neologism dies an early death. I wouldn't mind "Hot Atheist," which Rolling Stone apparently applied to Sam Harris.

As for not-so-old atheists, there's Phil Paulson, who died at 59. He's the Vietnam Vet who had been fighting for 17 years to get the cross taken down in San Diego. Although he finally won, the case is still under appeal, and there's the parallel shenanigans of the city giving the land to the federal government to try to do an end-run around the court ruling. I hope his death won't make the courts decide that the issue is now moot.

"New"? What's fucking "new"? Is it the evangelical part?

I guess that's part of it; the other part is being mean & uppity: "The New Atheists will not let us off the hook simply because we are [agnostic]. They condemn not just belief in God but respect for belief in God. Religion is not only wrong; it's evil. Now that the battle has been joined, there's no excuse for shirking."

I'm halfway through Dennett's book, and he doesn't seem to fit this description (nor does he fit it in the article itself, even though he's one of the 3 New Atheists of the title)

Yeah, mean and uppity are definitely part of this "movement." Even Brian Flemming has been getting on my nerves lately.

What if you're already mean and uppity, and happen to be an atheist?
