Yesterday, Becca took me to the Magritte exhibit at LACMA. It was crowded as hell, but lots of good clean surrealist fun. To eke out the Magrittes (of which they had quite a lot, really) they had added various other related works, mainly homages and rip-offs by other artists. One of the neat things they had was a little accordion-folded exhibit booklet that Magritte had designed for a showing in New York. It sort of spelled out his philosophy of things, images and words. And of course, they had a number of his best paintings there. And there were also a couple of pieces from his 'vache' period - I was unfamiliar with them and I guess I wish I were still unfamiliar with them.
