Best line so far

So I've been reading Arthur Lyon Cross' A Shorter History of England and Greater Britain (1930). Sure it's 75+ years old, but has the history of England really changed that much? Besides, I got it for two bucks at a used book sale. A thousand pages! For two bucks!
Anyway, since it's old, I can use the holy power of Google to show you the best sentence in the book (so far).
