The Best of Gene Wolfe

A wide-ranging collection of 31 short stories by Gene Wolfe. A lot of great stuff in there. For me, some of them tend to go off into lala land, but Wolfe never plays it safe -- he's always setting off on a tightrope-walk across the literary canon, and inevitably he's going to fall (IMHO) every once in a while.

Good uns (as much as I can remember now from scanning the titles) include: "The Toy Theater", "La Befana", "The Marvelous Brass Chessplaying Automaton", and the "Death of the Island Doctor" [but not "The Death of Dr. Island", or "The Island of Doctor Death and Other Stories", the latter of which was, of course, first anthologized in The Island of Doctor Death and Other Stories and Other Stories]
